The world premiere of Transit of Venus, composed by Victor Davies with libretto by Maureen Hunter, will kick off Manitoba Opera's 35th season with three performances: Saturday, November 24, Tuesday, November 27, and Friday, November 30 at the Centennial Concert Hall. Transit of Venus is the first opera commissioned for main-stage production in the history of the company and is based on the internationally acclaimed play of the same name by Hunter. It is a love story of destiny and desire that explores achieving your potential and following your destiny versus being with the people you love. Inspired by the real-life expeditions of 18th century French astronomer, Guillaume le Gentil de la Galaisiere, this three-act opera will be sung in English.
The all-star cast features Russell Braun (Le Gentil), Judith Forst (Madame Sylvie), Jean Stilwell (Margot), Monica Huisman (Celeste), and Colin Ainsworth (Demarais). It will be conducted by James Meena and directed by Larry Desrochers who directed the play when it premiered at MTC in 1992.
